Cut
An abrupt transition from one scene to another.
Jump Cut
A cut in film editing where two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly.
Montage
A series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information.
B-Roll
Supplementary footage that provides context to the story.
Crossfade
A transition between two scenes where one fades out as the other fades in.
L Cut
When the audio from the following scene starts before the video transition takes place.
J Cut
When the audio from the current scene continues playing over the beginning of the next scene.
Match Cut
A cut that transitions from one scene to another by preserving continuity of action or subject.
Cutaway
A shot that's usually of something other than the current action.
Dissolve
A transition where one image is slowly replaced by another by fading out and in simultaneously.
Bounce
A sudden switch back and forth between two shots or scenes.
Voiceover
A piece of narration in a movie or broadcast, not accompanied by an image of the speaker.
Storyboard
A sequence of drawings representing the shots planned for a movie or television production.
Linear Editing
Editing footage in a predetermined, ordered sequence.
Non-Linear Editing
The process of editing digital video sequences without needing a linear order.
Continuity Editing
The process of combining more shots to create a realistic scene that does not necessarily reflect real-world time and space.
Rough Cut
The first stage of editing where the editor tries to follow the script to assemble the film.
Final Cut
The last version of an edited film, approved by the director and the producer.
Color Correction
The process of altering and enhancing the color of a motion picture, video image, or still image either electronically, photo-chemically, or digitally.
Color Grading
The process of changing or enhancing the color of a motion picture, video image, or still image.
Aspect Ratio
The ratio of the width to the height of an image or screen.
Frame Rate
The frequency (rate) at which consecutive images called frames appear on a display.
Resolution
The degree of detail visible within an image and is usually associated with the number of pixels.
Compositing
Combining visual elements from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene.
Rendering
The process of generating an image from a model by means of computer programs.
Bite
A brief segment of speech extracted from a longer piece of audio, often used to promote or exemplify the full length piece.
Slate
A clapperboard used at the beginning of a take that provides reference points for syncing sound and film.
Insert
A shot of part of a scene as filmed from a different angle and/or focal length from the master shot.
NLE (Non-Linear Editing System)
A video (or audio) editing system that performs random access on source material.
Sequence
A series of scenes or shots unified by a shared action or motif.
