Rotoscoping
An animation technique that animators use to trace over motion picture footage, frame by frame.
Forced Perspective
A technique that employs optical illusion to make an object appear farther away, closer, larger, or smaller than it actually is.
Squibs
Small explosive devices used in film to simulate bullet impacts or small explosions on actors or objects.
Miniature Effects
Using scaled-down models to represent objects or environments in film, which are then filmed to appear full-sized.
Dolly Zoom
A camera effect that distorts perspective to create disorientation, where the camera moves closer or farther from the subject while zooming in the opposite direction.
Digital Compositing
Combining visual elements from separate sources into single images to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene.
Motion Capture
A process where actors' movements are recorded and then applied to a digital character model.
Match Move
A technique that allows the insertion of computer graphics into live-action footage with correct position, scale, orientation, and motion.
Depth of Field
A cinematography technique that refers to the distance between the nearest and the farthest objects that are in acceptably sharp focus.
High-Speed Photography
Capturing images at an extremely rapid frame rate, which can be played back in slow motion to observe details usually imperceptible to the naked eye.
Plate Shot
Background footage or an image which will have additional effects or imagery added in post-production.
Chroma Keying
Technique for layering two images/videos together based on color hues. Commonly used for green screens.
Matte Painting
Creating realistic backgrounds using painted scenes, photography, or digital rendering to enable filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment.
Pyrotechnics
Use of controlled explosions and fire for creating explosive effects in films.
CGI
Computer-Generated Imagery, where images or effects are created using computer software.
Atmospheric Effects
Uses smoke, fog, mist, or dust to create a certain mood or environment on set.
Bullet Time
A visual effect used to slow down time during an action sequence, allowing high-speed movements to be seen in detail.
Wire Removal
Visual effect where wires used during filming to create stunts or flying scenes are digitally removed.
Stop Motion
An animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own by moving it in small increments between individually photographed frames.
Practical Effects
Special effects produced physically without computer-generated imagery or digital enhancement.
