Popular Sovereignty
The concept that the authority of a state and its government are created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their elected representatives.
Separation of Powers
A model for the governance of a state where the state's government is divided into branches, each with separate, independent powers and responsibilities so that the powers of one branch are not in conflict with those of the other branches.
Judicial Review
The power of the courts to assess whether a law is in compliance with the constitution.
Federalism
A system of government in which entities such as states or provinces share power with a national government.
Rule of Law
The principle that all people and institutions are subject to and accountable to law that is fairly applied and enforced.
