The House of Representatives can vote to impeach a federal official, resulting in a trial in the Senate.
Article(s) of Impeachment
Once a decision to impeach is made, the House formalizes the charges into article(s) of impeachment.
Senate Trial
Following impeachment by the House, the Senate holds a trial to determine if the official will be convicted and removed from office.
Verdict of Conviction
A two-thirds supermajority vote in the Senate is required to convict and remove the official from office.
Initiation of Impeachment
The impeachment process is initiated when a member of the House of Representatives submits a resolution or an inquiry of impeachment is approved.
Post-Trial Consequences
If convicted, the official is removed from office and may be barred from holding future office, but separate criminal charges must be pursued in the judiciary.
Presiding Officer
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presides over the trial if the President is impeached. For other officials, the Senate's presiding officer takes on this role.
