15th Amendment
Ratified in 1870, this amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits the federal government and each state from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's 'race, color, or previous condition of servitude.'
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Aimed to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote, primarily in the South. It resulted in the mass enfranchisement of racial minorities throughout the country, especially African Americans.
19th Amendment
Adopted in 1920, this amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex, effectively giving women the right to vote.
26th Amendment
Ratified in 1971, this amendment to the U.S. Constitution lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 for all elections, which enfranchised millions of young Americans.
Shelby County v. Holder (2013)
A landmark Supreme Court decision that effectively invalidated a key part of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Court held that Section 4(b) of the Act, which contained the coverage formula determining which areas had to have changes to their voting laws pre-cleared by the federal government, was unconstitutional.
24th Amendment
Ratified in 1964, this amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits both Congress and the states from conditioning the right to vote in federal elections on payment of a poll tax or other types of tax.
