Space-Time Curvature
The manifestation of gravity as geometry of space-time as described by General Relativity, where mass and energy can 'bend' the fabric of space and time.
Gravitational Lensing
A phenomenon where light from a distant source is bent around a massive object between the source and the observer, much like a lens, due to the effect of the mass on space-time.
Gravitational Waves
Ripples in the curvature of space-time which propagate as waves outward from their source at the speed of light, produced by certain movements of mass, especially when large masses accelerate.
Cosmological Constant
A term added by Einstein to his field equations of General Relativity, representing an unknown force that counteracts gravity on a cosmological scale, now associated with the concept of dark energy.
Einstein's Field Equations
A set of ten interrelated differential equations that describe the fundamental interaction of gravitation as a result of space-time being curved by matter and energy.
Geodesic
The shortest path between two points in curved space-time, which is the path a free-falling object follows under gravity's influence without any forces acting upon it.
Schwarzschild Radius
The radius of the event horizon of a non-rotating black hole, beyond which nothing can escape the gravitational pull, not even light.
The Equivalence Principle
A principle stating that the gravitational force as experienced locally while standing on a massive body (such as the Earth) is equivalent to the pseudo-force experienced by an observer in a non-inertial (accelerated) frame of reference.
Gravitational Time Dilation
The difference in the elapsed time as measured by two observers, due to the variation in gravitational potential; the higher the gravity, the slower the time passes.
Frame-Dragging
The process by which rotating masses can 'twist' nearby space and time around them, predicted by General Relativity and confirmed by experiments such as Gravity Probe B.
