Quantum Mechanics Postulates

Flashcards
0/5
Postulate 1
A physical system is completely described by its wave function, a complex function of the coordinates of the particle(s) which encodes the probabilities for its properties.
Postulate 2
The evolution of the wave function over time is described by Schrödinger's equation.
Postulate 3
The possible measured values of a physical quantity are the eigenvalues of the corresponding operator.
Postulate 4
If a physical quantity is measured, the system is found in a corresponding eigenstate of the operator of that quantity.
Postulate 5
In quantum mechanics, physical quantities are represented by Hermitian operators. The probability of obtaining an eigenvalue is given by the square of the magnitude of the wave function's projection on the eigenstate of the operator.
