Armando Diaz Experience
A monologist tells personal stories that inspire the following scenes in this long-form improv format. Performers draw themes and characters from the stories.
Spoken
Spoken is a format where a single word suggested by the audience inspires a series of interconnected scenes that explore different contexts and meanings of the word.
Short-form improv
Short-form improv consists of short, often game-based scenes that are typically guided by audience suggestions. It can include a variety of games such as 'Whose Line', 'Freeze Tag', and 'Party Quirks'.
The Harold
The Harold is a long-form improv structure that includes an opening, three beats of scenes, group games, and a final convergence of the thematic material.
The Movie
In 'The Movie' format, performers improvise a movie complete with different genres, camera angles, and editing techniques suggested by the audience.
Narrative Collage
Narrative Collage pieces together a series of diverse scenes or monologues that may not directly connect but together create a thematic or narrative whole.
Monoscene
The Monoscene is facilitated within a single location and real-time; all scenes happen consecutively with no time jumps, exploring relationships and events as they unfold.
Long-form improv
Long-form improv involves creating longer narratives or scenes. The Harold, which may include a series of connected scenes and games, is a popular long-form structure.
The Soap Opera
This format mimics the style of a soap opera, complete with melodramatic themes, cliffhangers, and character arcs that unfold over multiple performances.
The Documentary
This format imitates a documentary film, with performers often breaking the fourth wall to speak directly to the imagined audience, providing commentary and context to the scenes.
Musical improv
Musical improv combines improvisation with musical performance. Scenes involve creating songs and sometimes full musicals on the spot, often with a pianist or small band.
La Ronde
La Ronde focuses on a series of two-person scenes; each scene introduces a new character and one from the previous scene, creating a 'round' of characters until it comes back to the first character.
The Bat
Performed in the dark, The Bat is an audio-only long-form improv format that emphasizes sound and verbal description over physical action.
The Deconstruction
The Deconstruction dissects an initial scene through subsequent scenes that explore its elements deeper, often breaking down themes, characters, and relationships.
Living Room
In the Living Room format, performers share real anecdotes in between improvised scenes, often blurring the line between reality and fiction.
