Banking Model of Education

Flashcards

Oppression and Liberation
The Banking Model is criticized for reinforcing the status quo and oppressive elements within society by not allowing students to challenge and reformulate knowledge. Pedagogically, it implies the necessity for an educational framework that empowers students to become agents of change in their own lives and societies.
Teacher-Student Dichotomy
The Banking Model positions teachers as the sole depositors of knowledge and students as passive recipients. This hinders critical thinking, as students are not encouraged to question or engage deeply with the content. Pedagogically, it suggests a need for a more dialogic approach where knowledge is co-constructed.
Narration Sickness
Term coined by Paulo Freire to describe the focus on memorization and regurgitation of content delivered by the teacher, leading to a lack of meaningful learning. It suggests a pedagogical shift towards problem-posing education, where students actively participate and reflect on their learning.
