Hidden Curriculum
The implicit lessons and values taught in schools that are not part of the formal curriculum, such as norms, beliefs, and social values. It is significant because it can reinforce societal inequalities and critical pedagogy aims to expose and challenge it.
Banking Model of Education
A term coined by Paulo Freire describing an education system where teachers deposit information into passive students. It's significant because critical pedagogy argues for a more collaborative and dialogic approach to education, where students actively participate and engage critically with the content.
Dialogue
A core component of critical pedagogy where teaching and learning are accomplished through conversation and exchange of ideas. It implies equality between the teacher and the student and is significant because it fosters critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
Cultural Capital
A concept from Pierre Bourdieu which describes the non-financial social assets that promote social mobility. In education, it addresses how background and culture can affect a student's success, and critical pedagogy seeks to mitigate the effects of unequal cultural capital.
Praxis
The process by which theory is enacted, embodied, and realized through practice, particularly in the social realm. In education, it refers to the practice of applying critical reflection to social conditions as a part of the learning process, blending theory and practice.
Conscientization
A term developed by Freire referring to the process of developing a critical awareness of one’s social reality through reflection and action. In education, it plays a vital role in empowering students to recognize and challenge oppressive social conditions.
