Whole Person Learning
The principle that education should address the emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive growth of students, not just academic achievement. Applied in education through a curriculum that integrates various forms of personal development and through teaching methods that acknowledge students’ various identities and experiences.
Intrinsic Motivation
An essential aspect of humanistic education, this is the idea that learning should stem from internal rewards, such as satisfaction and enjoyment, rather than external forces like grades or rewards. Educators apply this by designing lessons that tap into students' interests and passions, encouraging exploration and curiosity.
Self-Actualization
A core principle of humanistic education, based on the work of Abraham Maslow, that refers to the complete realization of one's potential and the development of personal fulfillment and creativity. In education, it is applied by providing students with opportunities for choice and self-directed learning activities, encouraging them to set their own goals and pursue projects that are meaningful to them.
Empathic Education
A concept where the educator relates to students with deep understanding and emotional sensitivity. Educators apply this by creating a caring and supportive classroom atmosphere, listening to students’ concerns genuinely, and responding to their emotional and academic needs.
Student-Centered Learning
An approach where students play an active role in their learning process, influenced by Carl Rogers' ideas. It’s applied by allowing students to explore their interests within the curriculum, engage in discussions, and reflect on their own learning, often leading to collaborative projects and critical thinking exercises.
