Social Constructivism
Social constructivism posits that learners construct knowledge not only through their own experiences but also through interactions with others. Educationally, this emphasizes the importance of collaborative learning environments where students can share perspectives and challenge each other's understanding.
Scaffolding
Scaffolding is a teaching method that involves providing support to students as they learn new concepts, gradually removing the support as they become more proficient. In education, this relates to the idea of supporting a student's journey from what they can do alone to what they can do with help, and eventually to independence.
Active Learning
Active learning refers to the perspective that learners actively construct new ideas or concepts based upon their current/past knowledge. In the context of education, this approach encourages students to actively engage with the material, question, explore, and apply their learning.
Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)
The ZPD represents the range of tasks that a learner can perform with the guidance of a more knowledgeable other but cannot yet perform independently. In education, this concept implies that teaching should occur within this zone, optimizing the student's potential for learning.
Problem-Based Learning (PBL)
Problem-Based Learning is an instructional method where students learn through the experience of solving an open-ended problem. This aligns with constructivist theory as it requires students to apply their existing knowledge to discover new learning through the problem-solving process.
