Fibrous Root System
In this system, a dense network of roots spreads out horizontally with no dominant central root. Example: Grass (Poaceae family).
Taproot System
This system has one main root that grows straight down from which other roots sprout laterally. Example: Carrot (Daucus carota).
Aerial Roots
Roots that do not penetrate the soil but instead grow above ground, often helping to support the plant. Example: Orchids (Orchidaceae family).
Haustorial Roots
Specialized roots that penetrate the host plant's tissue and draw nutrients from it. Example: Mistletoe (Viscum album).
Adventitious Root System
These roots grow from an organ of the plant other than the primary root system, often from stems or leaves. Example: Corn (Zea mays).
Storage Roots
Modified roots that store nutrients and water. Example: Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas).
