Gestalt Principles
A theory of visual perception that describes the ways by which humans naturally organize visual elements into groups or unified wholes when certain principles are applied.
Design Language
A set of consistent visual elements that makes a product's aesthetic instantly recognizable and serves as its unique 'visual identity'.
Aesthetic Usability Effect
A phenomenon where users often perceive aesthetically pleasing designs as more usable, even if they aren't functionally improved.
Skeuomorphism
A design principle in which design cues are taken from the physical world to help users understand how to use a digital interface.
Sustainability
A design philosophy focused on creating products and solutions that have minimal negative impact on the environment, are socially responsible, and can economically viable over their entire lifecycle.
Critique
An analytical process in which a design is evaluated based on its effectiveness, functionality, aesthetics, and usability, often involving peer review, analysis, and constructive feedback.
Affordance
A term that refers to the perceived and actual properties of a thing, primarily those fundamental properties that determine just how the thing could possibly be used.
Ergonomics
The science of designing products, systems, and environments to maximize safety, comfort, and efficiency for human users.
White Space
The negative or empty space around and between the subjects of an image or design, which helps to define and separate the visual elements, and can enhance readability and comprehension.
Hierarchy
An arrangement or classification of design elements in order of importance, which guides the user's eye and creates an organized and easily navigable design.
Form Follows Function
A design principle that states that the shape of a building or object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose.
Modularity
A design approach that subdivides a system into smaller parts (modules) that can be independently created, altered, replaced, or exchanged with other modules or between different systems.
