Thumbnail Sketching
Quick, small sketches that capture basic design concepts. Typically used in the early ideation stages of design to explore a wide range of ideas.
Perspective Drawing
A technique used to depict spatial depth and dimension on a flat surface. Typically used for rendering realistic designs where the relationship and proportion of objects to their environment are critical.
Circulation Sketch
Illustrates the movement within a design, often using arrows or lines to show how a user would interact with the object. It helps designers consider the ergonomic and functional aspects of the product.
Gestural Drawing
Captures the action, form, and pose of a subject in a loose and fluent way. This technique is typically used to convey movement and basic structure quickly in the design process.
Chiaroscuro
An Italian term meaning 'light-dark', this technique uses strong contrasts between light and dark to give the illusion of volume in modeling three-dimensional objects and figures.
Section Drawing
A technical drawing technique that represents an object as if cut through a plane. This is used to show internal features and understand the object’s assembly or construction.
Tone Mapping
The process of applying a range of tones to a sketch, from light to dark, to represent light’s impact on the subject. This is essential in depicting realistic material properties and lighting.
Cross Hatching
A shading technique using intersecting sets of parallel lines to create texture and tone. Often used in areas where shadows and additional texture are needed.
Contour Drawing
A technique where the artist sketches the outline of a subject, focusing on its edge and shape. It is used to train the designer's eye to observe and capture the essential details of an object.
Squinting
A method used by designers and artists to simplify the subject they are observing by reducing the detail and visual noise. Helps in identifying the most important forms and lighting conditions.
