Kanban Board
A visual tool for managing work as it moves through a process. It is used to visualize the workflow, limit work in progress, and maximize efficiency.
WIP Limits
Work in Progress limits restrict the maximum number of tasks in the different stages of the workflow. It's used to promote focus, reduce multitasking, and identify bottlenecks.
Lead Time
The amount of time it takes for a piece of work to move from start to finish on a Kanban board. It's used for performance measurement and process optimization.
Cycle Time
The time it takes to complete a task once it's started. It helps teams measure the efficiency of their process and predict future performance.
Throughput
The number of tasks completed in a certain period. It's utilized to gauge productivity and the effectiveness of the Kanban system.
Cumulative Flow Diagram
A visual representation showing the number of tasks in each state of the workflow over time. It's used to identify trends, bottlenecks, and workflow balance.
Kanban Cadences
A set of meetings designed to keep the Kanban process running smoothly. They are used for planning, process improvement, and feedback loops.
Pull System
A work process where tasks are pulled into the system when there is capacity, rather than being pushed in. It aims to reduce overload and promote just-in-time production.
Continuous Improvement
An ongoing effort to improve products, services, or processes incrementally. It's key in Kanban to enhance efficiency and adapt to change.
Kanban Cards
Physical or digital cards that represent work items on a Kanban board. They're used to track progress and provide details about each task.
Flow Efficiency
A measurement of the proportion of active work time compared to total lead time. It's used to identify the potential for process improvement by reducing inactive time.
Service Level Expectation (SLE)
A prediction about how long it will take to complete a work item. It's used to set realistic expectations and improve customer satisfaction.
Classes of Service
Different categories of work that have unique policies or WIP limits. They're used to manage priority and risk and ensure that various types of work flow efficiently.
Blockers
Obstacles that prevent a task from moving forward in the Kanban system. They are identified, managed, and removed to improve the flow of work.
Work Item Aging
The duration that a task has spent in the workflow. Monitoring aging helps teams to identify tasks that might become bottlenecks.
Definition of Done (DoD)
The criteria a task must meet to be considered complete in the Kanban system. It ensures consistency and a shared understanding of completion.
