Dendrochronology
The scientific method of dating tree rings (also called growth rings) to the exact year they were formed in order to analyze atmospheric conditions during different periods in history.
Annual Growth Rings
Rings formed in the trunk of a tree due to the changes in growth speed over the seasons, which are used to estimate the age of the tree.
Crossdating
A dendrochronological technique that aligns the growth rings of separate trees or wooden objects to build an accurate chronological sequence.
Ring-Width Series
The sequence of widths of the annual growth rings, which can be analyzed to infer past climatological conditions.
Core Sample
A cylindrical section of a tree trunk extracted with a borer that is used to count and measure the tree rings without cutting down the tree.
Master Chronology
An extensive tree-ring sequence formed by overlapping many ring-width series from living and dead wood across various locales.
Dendroclimatology
The study of past climate changes through the analysis of tree-ring growth patterns.
Sensitivity
The responsiveness of a tree's growth ring width to changes in environmental conditions from year to year.
Pointer Years
Specific years in which tree-ring growth is significantly larger or smaller than usual, often due to extreme climatic conditions.
Bark Edge
The outermost layer in a core sample or ring series, which indicates the most recent growth ring of the tree and thus its last year of growth.
