New York Declaration on Forests
Purpose: To halt global deforestation. Key goals: Cut natural forest loss in half by 2020, and strive to end it by 2030. Participating countries: Endorsed by dozens of governments, companies, and civil society groups.
Bonn Challenge
Purpose: To restore degraded and deforested lands. Key goals: Restore 150 million hectares of land by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030. Participating countries: Over 60 countries globally.
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+)
Purpose: To mitigate climate change through forest conservation. Key goals: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance forest carbon stocks. Participating countries: Over 50 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
Purpose: To promote responsible management of the world’s forests. Key goals: Ensure that forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social, and ethical standards. Participating countries: Operates in over 80 countries.
International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO)
Purpose: To promote sustainable management and conservation of tropical forests. Key goals: Enhance the capacity to manage and utilize tropical forests sustainably, expand and diversify international trade in tropical timber. Participating countries: 74 member countries, including both tropical timber producers and consumers.
The Montreal Process
Purpose: To implement criteria and indicators for the conservation and sustainable management of temperate and boreal forests. Key goals: Promote sustainable forest management practices. Participating countries: 12 countries, including the USA, Canada, and Japan.
The Lacey Act
Purpose: To combat illegal logging and associated trade. Key goals: Prohibit trade in wildlife, fish, and plants that have been illegally taken, possessed, transported, or sold. Participating countries: United States (with international implications).
Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO)
Purpose: To promote sustainable development and conservation in the Amazon Basin. Key goals: Improve the quality of life of Amazonian populations and conserve the biodiversity of the Amazon Basin. Participating countries: 8 countries including Brazil, Peru, and Colombia.
Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
Purpose: To ensure that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social, and ethical standards. Key goals: Promote sustainable forest management through certification. Participating countries: Has national members in over 40 countries.
UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration
Purpose: To prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems. Key goals: Restore degraded ecosystems, improve livelihoods, combat climate change. Participating countries: Global initiative supported by multiple UN member states.
