Compass Navigation
A tool that uses the Earth's magnetic field to determine direction. It's especially useful in dense forests where GPS signals might be weak.
Handrailing
Using linear features like rivers, trails, or ridges as guides for navigation. It helps to prevent getting lost by providing a constant reference.
Pacing
Estimating distance traveled by counting steps. In a forest, it's often used in conjunction with a map to track progress and avoid overshooting targets.
Dead Reckoning
Navigating by computing current position based on a previously determined position, course, and speed or time. Useful in forests when there are few landmarks.
Topographic Map
A map depicting terrain relief, showing ground shape and elevation with contour lines. Essential for navigating through forests by identifying natural landmarks.
GPS Device
A receiver that uses satellite signals to determine your exact location. In forests, a GPS device can be used to follow or mark waypoints along a trail.
Aiming Off
A navigation technique where you aim deliberately to one side of your target, so upon reaching a linear feature, you will know which way to turn. Useful in ensuring you reach a trail or river.
Triangulation
Determining location by using a map and compass to shoot bearings to two or three known locations. In a forest, this is helpful when you are unsure of your position.
