Point of Contact
The area where two dancers touch and exchange weight; it's the physical connection that's maintained throughout the improvisation.
Rolling Point of Contact
Instead of a static touch, the point of contact dynamically rolls or slides on the partner's body, allowing fluid movement and transitions.
Weight Sharing
A foundational principle where dancers support and share each other's weight, leading to lifts and balance off their own center.
Following
One partner surrenders to the movements of the other, maintaining a connection and responding to their partner's direction and flow.
Leading
Initiating movement and direction in the dance, which the follower will respond to, creating a dialogue of movement.
Counterbalance
Using each other's weight to create balance in a position that would be impossible alone.
Falling
Letting the body lose balance intentionally, knowing that the partner will provide support and follow through the movement.
Lifting
One dancer elevates their partner off the ground, using principles of weight sharing and counterbalance to execute the lift safely.
Momentum
Using the inertial force from movement to lead naturally into subsequent movements, making actions appear effortless.
Listening
Being attuned to one's partner's movements, touches, and weight shifts, creating a strong sense of presence and responsiveness.
Suspension
Creating a moment of hang time or pause in the movement, often used to accentuate shifts in the dynamic or flow.
Fluidity
The quality of movement that allows for smooth and continuous motion, a key aspect of making connections and transitions seamless.
Grounding
Maintaining a physical and mental connection to the floor, providing stability and a base for movements.
Breathing
Using the rhythm and flow of breath to coordinate with movements, allowing for increased connection and communication.
Spatial Awareness
Being conscious of the dance space and one's relationship to the partner, facilitating movement adaptation and injury prevention.
