Rhythm
A strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound. Rhythm is essential to dance as it provides a structured timing for dancers to follow, creating a foundation for choreographic phrases.
Tempo
The speed or pace of a given piece. In dance creation, tempo influences the rhythm and energy of the choreography, as dancers move in sync with the music's pace.
Polyrhythm
The simultaneous combination of contrasting rhythms in music. Polyrhythm in dance can challenge dancers to maintain varying rhythms in different parts of their body simultaneously, often resulting in intricate and textured movement.
Improvisation
The act of creating spontaneous movement. Improvisation in dance often uses the music as a stimulus for movement ideas and can help generate authentic and original choreography.
Motif
A short musical idea or pattern that is characteristic of a composition. In dance, a motif can be developed into a fuller theme providing a basis for choreographic structure and variation.
Counterpoint
A compositional technique whereby two or more melodic lines are combined. In dance, counterpoint can be used to create complex sequences where dancers perform different movements that contrast or complement each other.
Dynamics
The volume or intensity of a musical piece. In dance, dynamics inspire the power and fluidity of movements, often leading to dramatic contrasts within a performance.
Musicality
The ability to express music in one's body or to see the musical structure, nature, and capabilities. Choreographers use musicality to create dances that closely interpret the music's nuances and emotions.
Syncopation
A disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm. It's a common tool in dance to create unexpected moments and highlights, often creating a more dynamic and exciting performance.
Phrasing
The way in which musical ideas are expressed in time. In dance, phrasing corresponds to the structuring of movements to match the musical phrases, often creating a seamless blend of music and movement.
