Cadence
The number of revolutions of the crank per minute; this is the rate at which a cyclist is pedalling/turning the pedals.
Drafting
Riding closely behind another rider to reduce wind resistance and effort required to maintain speed.
Peloton
The main group of riders in a race; offers aerodynamic advantage and conserves energy.
Attack
A sudden acceleration to break away from the peloton or a competitor.
Bonking
A state of physical exhaustion during cycling, often due to glycogen depletion in the muscles.
Derailleur
A mechanism for moving the chain from one sprocket to another to change gears on a bike.
Presta Valve
A type of valve found on high-pressure road bike and mountain bike tubes.
Criterium
A bike race consisting of several laps around a closed circuit, the length of each lap or circuit typically ranging from about 800 meters to 10,000 meters.
Domestique
A rider who works for the benefit of their team and leader, rather than trying to win the race.
Granny Gear
The smallest front chainring combined with the largest rear cog, which provides the easiest gear ratio for climbing steep hills.
Bunny Hop
A technique where the rider lifts the bike over an obstacle while remaining in contact with the pedals.
Echelon
A formation where cyclists ride at an angle to one another to cope with crosswinds and share the work of breaking the wind.
Time Trial
A race against the clock where cyclists start individually or in teams and try to complete the course in the shortest time possible.
Counter-Attack
An aggressive move where a cyclist or group of cyclists try to catch up and pass another rider or group who has just attacked or broken away from the peloton.
Cyclocross
A form of bike racing that involves cycling on mixed terrains (such as pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills, and obstacles) requiring the rider to dismount and carry the bike at times.
Musette
A lightweight shoulder bag given to riders in a feed zone, containing food and drinks.
Rollers
A type of indoor cycling trainer that features three rolling cylinders which the bike tires rest upon, allowing riders to practice balance and maintain fitness.
Chamois
The padded insert in cycling shorts that provides cushioning and reduces friction for comfort during long bike rides.
Bottle Cage
A device attached to a bicycle for holding a water bottle.
Breakaway
When one or more riders detach from the main group to gain a lead.
