Boast Shot
A shot that hits the sidewall or back wall before it hits the front wall, creating an angle that can catch the opponent off-guard.
Drive Shot
A hard and straight shot parallel to the sidewall, aimed at traveling deep into the backcourt, forcing the opponent to play from a defensive position.
Changing Pace
Varying the speed and force behind shots to disrupt the opponent's rhythm and create openings for offensive shots.
Lob Shot
A high shot that travels over the opponent's head, intended to land deep in the court, giving the hitter time to recover to the 'T' position.
Adaptability
The ability to adjust strategies and techniques based on the opponent's playing style, court conditions, or match progress.
Drop Shot
A soft and precise shot that barely reaches the front wall and then falls quickly to the floor, ideally in the front corners where it's difficult for the opponent to retrieve.
Cross-Court Shot
A shot hit to the opposite side of the court, traveling diagonally. This can catch an opponent off-guard if they are expecting a straight drive.
Defensive Play
Employing shots such as high lobs and tight rail shots in situations where the primary goal is to regain a neutral or advantageous court position.
The 'T' Position
Maintaining a central position on the squash court from which a player can reach the majority of shots with minimal movement.
Shot Variation
Using a variety of different shots (drives, boasts, drops, lobs) throughout the match to keep the opponent guessing and off-balance.
Nick Shot
A shot that strikes the juncture of the wall and floor (the 'nick'), resulting in a ball that rolls out with little bounce, often winning the rally.
Serving Strategy
Choosing different types of serves (e.g., lob serve, power serve) to exploit the opponent's weaknesses or to set up advantageous positions for the server.
Psychological Warfare
Using non-physical tactics such as body language, shot disguising, or strategic timeouts to mentally disrupt the opponent's game.
Court Coverage
The strategy of moving and positioning oneself to be able to reach and return as many shots as possible, often involving anticipation and efficient footwork.
Match Preparation
Planning before a match by analyzing the opponent's strengths and weaknesses, practicing specific shots, and formulating a game plan.
Rail Shot
Another term for a straight drive shot that runs close and parallel to the sidewall, making it difficult for the opponent to attack.
Volleying Strategy
Intercepting the ball before it touches the ground to apply pressure, gain strategic positions, and reduce the opponent's reaction time.
Attacking the Front Corners
Aiming shots at the front corners to force the opponent to move to the front of the court, potentially causing them to play weak returns.
