Parry
A defensive move used to deflect an opponent's attack.
En Garde
The basic starting position for fencing bouts.
Bind
A defensive or offensive blade action in which one fencer forces the opponent's blade into a different line and follows with an attack.
Lunge
A fundamental attacking move that involves a rapid thrust forward.
Froissement
An offensive move that forces the opponent’s blade aside using a strong sliding motion.
Balestra
A small hop forward followed by a lunge, used to surprise the opponent and close distance quickly.
Redoublement
An action where after an initial attack has been parried, the attacker immediately launches a new attack.
Remise
An attack that follows immediately after the initial attack without withdrawing the arm.
Fleche
An attacking move where the fencer leaps forward off the front foot and tries to hit the opponent while passing by.
Retreat
A basic backward movement maintaining the en garde stance.
Beat Attack
An aggressive action where the fencer hits the opponent's blade to initiate an attack.
Advance
A basic forward movement while maintaining the en garde stance.
Counter-riposte
A defensive move that is a counter-action to an opponent's riposte.
Disengage
A move that involves a circular motion to avoid the opponent's parry.
Riposte
An offensive action made immediately after a successful parry.
