Wetsuit
A garment made of foamed neoprene used by triathletes during the swim leg to provide thermal insulation, buoyancy, and reduce water resistance.
T1 and T2
T1 refers to the transition from swimming to cycling, and T2 refers to the transition from cycling to running in a triathlon.
Brick Workout
A training session that pairs two disciplines of triathlon in quick succession, such as biking followed immediately by running, to simulate race conditions.
ITU
International Triathlon Union, the world governing body for the sport of triathlon and related multisport disciplines.
Transition Area
The designated area where triathletes change gear for different segments of the race, typically between swimming to cycling and cycling to running.
Hydration Strategy
A plan for consuming fluids to avoid dehydration during the triathlon, especially important during the bike and run legs.
Bonking
A term used to describe hitting the wall or running out of energy due to glycogen depletion, often occurring during the last portion of the race.
Ironman
A long-distance triathlon race organized by the World Triathlon Corporation consisting of a 3.86km swim, 180.25km bicycle ride, and a marathon 42.20km run, raced in that order.
Drafting
The technique of closely following another competitor to reduce wind resistance during the cycling leg of the race. It is illegal in some triathlon competitions.
Sprint Distance
A short-distance triathlon typically involving a 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run.
Triathlon
A multi-stage competition involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines, typically swimming, cycling, and running.
Aero Bars
Handlebar extensions that allow the rider to get into a more aerodynamic position by resting their forearms and reducing wind resistance, commonly used in the cycling portion of a triathlon.
Nutrition Plan
A strategy for fuel intake before and during the triathlon to maintain energy levels and electrolyte balance.
Olympic Distance
A standard triathlon distance consisting of a 1.5km swim, 40km bike, and 10km run.
Race Bib
A number assigned to each competitor in a triathlon, typically worn on the torso during the run and on the back during the bike leg.
