Love
Tennis term signifying a score of zero.
Topspin
Spin applied to the ball where the top of the ball moves away from the player, resulting in a downward trajectory upon hitting the ground.
Ace
A serve that is neither touched nor returned by the receiving player and thus, a point is won.
Double Fault
Failure of both the first and second service attempts, resulting in the loss of a point.
Let
A serve that touches the net and lands in the correct service box, requiring the serve to be retaken.
Hawk-Eye
A computer system that visually tracks the ball's trajectory and is used to adjudicate disputed line calls.
Break Point
A situation where the receiving player can win the game if they win the next point.
Deuce
A score of 40-40, where players need to score two consecutive points to win the game.
Alley
The area of the court that is the space between the singles and doubles sidelines.
Forehand
A stroke where the ball is hit with the racquet hand palm facing the ball.
Advantage
Score indicating that a player needs one more point to win the game after the score is deuce.
Volley
A shot where the ball is hit before it bounces on the ground, usually performed near the net.
Lob
A high arc shot that sends the ball over the opponent's head, intended to land deep in the court.
Serve and Volley
A playing style where a player serves and quickly moves forward towards the net to volley the return shot.
Grand Slam
A term referring to the four most important annual tennis events: Wimbledon, US Open, French Open, and Australian Open.
Unforced Error
A mistake in play, such as a missed shot, not caused by the opponent's good play.
Baseline
The line at the back of the tennis court which marks the boundary for the length of the court in singles and doubles.
Crosscourt
A shot that is hit diagonally across the court from one side to the other.
Match Point
A situation where a player has the opportunity to win the entire match by winning the next point.
Backhand
A stroke in which the ball is hit with the back of the racquet hand facing the ball.
