Double Half Hitch
Pass the rope around the object. Bring your working end over the standing part, then under and through the loop created (half hitch). Repeat the process for a second half hitch. Pull to tighten the compound knot against the post.
Square Knot
Take two rope ends and pass the right end over and under the left end. Then take the new right end (previously left) over and under the new left end. Pull both ends to tighten the knot securely.
Taut-Line Hitch
Wrap the end of the rope around the standing part twice inside of the loop near the object it's tied to. Bring the end back out, and make an additional hitch on the outside of the loops, before tightening the hitch by sliding it up or down the standing part.
Figure-Eight Knot
Make a loop by laying the rope over itself. Take the end of the rope back under the standing part, then pass the working end through the loop just created. Tighten the knot by pulling both on the loop and the standing part.
Fisherman's Knot
Tie a simple overhand knot at the end of each rope, with each working end wrapping around the other rope's standing part before passing back through its own overhand knot. Pull on both standing parts to tighten the knots against each other.
Bowline Knot
Create a small loop leaving enough rope for the desired loop size. Pass the end of the rope up through the loop, around the standing part, and back down through the loop. Tighten the knot by pulling on the standing part while holding the loop and the tail.
Sheet Bend
Make a bight in the thicker or more slippery rope. Pass the end of the other rope through the bight from beneath and around the entire bight, tucking the working end under its own standing part.
Trucker's Hitch
Tie a small fixed loop in the middle of the rope. Pass the other end of the rope around the object and through the loop. Pull on this end to create tension. Hold the tension and secure with a couple of half hitches around either the loop or the standing part of the rope.
Clove Hitch
Pass the rope around the post or object. Cross it over itself as you bring it around a second time. Slip the working end under the last pass before tightening the hitch by pulling both ends.
Prusik Knot
Wrap a loop of cord around a rope several times (usually 3-5 times) inside the loop, ensuring that the wraps lie neatly next to each other. Pass the end of the loop through the middle and pull on both ends of the loop so the wraps tighten securely against the rope.
