Flashcards
0/7
Principle Number 1
Plan Ahead and Prepare: Proper planning helps adventurers to minimize their environmental impact by anticipating and mitigating potential issues. Example: Researching the wildlife, regulations, and weather conditions of an area before hiking to avoid surprises and reduce the risk of damaging the environment.
Principle Number 4
Leave What You Find: Preserving the natural state of wilderness areas by not taking natural objects or cultural artifacts, and avoiding the alteration of natural landmarks. Example: Not picking flowers or taking rocks home, and not carving into trees or building structures.
Principle Number 3
Dispose of Waste Properly: Ensures that all waste, including food and litter, is packed out or disposed of correctly to prevent pollution and disturbances to wildlife. Example: Packing out all trash, leftover food, and litter; and utilizing proper sanitation practices.
Principle Number 2
Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces: Sticking to trails and camping on surfaces that resist damage helps to prevent soil erosion and protects the habitat. Example: Using established trails and campsites instead of forging new paths or camping on untouched land.
Principle Number 5
Minimize Campfire Impacts: Campfires can cause lasting impacts, so use a lightweight stove for cooking and enjoy a candle lantern for light. If a fire is necessary, keep it small and use established fire rings. Example: Using a camp stove instead of a campfire to cook meals while backpacking.
Principle Number 6
Respect Wildlife: Observing wildlife from a distance to avoid disturbing their natural behaviors and habitat. Example: Not approaching, feeding, or following wildlife, and securing food and trash to avoid attracting animals to your campsite.
Principle Number 7
Be Considerate of Other Visitors: Being courteous to other users of the outdoors by keeping noise levels down, yielding to other users on trails, and maintaining small group sizes. Example: Speaking softly and yielding to uphill hikers on narrow trails.
