Broca's Aphasia
Symptoms: Non-fluent speech, good comprehension. Affected Brain Areas: Left inferior frontal gyrus.
Wernicke's Aphasia
Symptoms: Fluent speech with little meaning, poor comprehension. Affected Brain Areas: Left superior temporal gyrus.
Anomic Aphasia
Symptoms: Difficulty finding words, relatively preserved speech and comprehension. Affected Brain Areas: Can involve different areas including the parietal and temporal lobes.
Global Aphasia
Symptoms: Severe communication difficulties in all areas; production, comprehension, and use of language. Affected Brain Areas: Large portion of the left hemisphere, often including both Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas.
Conduction Aphasia
Symptoms: Fluent speech, good comprehension, but poor repetition. Affected Brain Areas: Left supramarginal gyrus and the arcuate fasciculus.
Transcortical Sensory Aphasia
Symptoms: Fluent speech, poor comprehension, good repetition. Affected Brain Areas: Posterior regions of the middle and superior temporal gyri.
Transcortical Motor Aphasia
Symptoms: Non-fluent speech, good comprehension, good repetition. Affected Brain Areas: Anterior superior frontal lobe.
Primary Progressive Aphasia
Symptoms: Gradual loss of language function, speech or understanding first affected. Affected Brain Areas: Atrophy usually starts in the left hemisphere's perisylvian or frontal regions.
