Anterior
Located towards the front of the brain; often refers to structures in the direction of the forehead.
Posterior
Located towards the back of the brain; refers to structures in the direction of the back of the head.
Dorsal
Located towards the top of the brain; refers to structures in the direction of the top of the skull.
Ventral
Located towards the bottom of the brain; refers to structures in the direction of the chin or base of the skull.
Lateral
Located further away from the midline of the brain; refers to a side-ward direction relative to the brain's center.
Medial
Located closer to the midline of the brain; refers to structures that are toward the center.
Superior
Located above another part; refers to a structure being nearer to the vertex (top) of the head.
Inferior
Located below another part; refers to a structure being nearer to the base of the skull.
Sagittal Plane
A vertical plane that divides the brain into left and right portions.
Coronal Plane
A vertical plane that runs perpendicular to the sagittal plane and divides the brain into anterior and posterior portions.
