Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)
Purpose: To assess the intelligence and cognitive ability of adults. Measures: Verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed.
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC)
Purpose: To assess the intelligence of children between ages 6 and 16. Measures: Similar to WAIS, verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed.
Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales
Purpose: To measure intelligence and cognitive abilities. Measures: Five factors of cognitive ability—fluid reasoning, knowledge, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial processing, and working memory.
Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT)
Purpose: To assess a student's readiness for college. Measures: Reading, writing and language, math, and an optional essay.
American College Testing (ACT)
Purpose: To measure high school students' readiness for college. Measures: English, mathematics, reading, science, and an optional writing test.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Purpose: To assess the general academic readiness for graduate-level work. Measures: Verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills.
Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
Purpose: To assess analytical thinking and reasoning through analogies. Measures: Critical thinking and analytical problem solving.
Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
Purpose: To assess key skills needed for success in law school. Measures: Reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, and logical reasoning.
Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
Purpose: To assess problem solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of natural, behavioral, and social science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine. Measures: Biological and biochemical foundations of living systems, chemical and physical foundations of biological systems, psychological, social, and biological foundations of behavior, and critical analysis and reasoning skills.
Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities
Purpose: To assess cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Measures: General intellectual ability, specific cognitive abilities, scholastic aptitude, and oral language.
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
Purpose: To determine qualification for enlistment in the United States Armed Forces. Measures: Word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, arithmetic reasoning, and mathematics knowledge, among other subjects.
Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)
Purpose: To assess and compare the reading ability of students internationally. Measures: Reading comprehension and literacy of fourth-grade students.
