Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
A form of psychotherapy that focuses on modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors, and thoughts by interrogating and uprooting negative or irrational beliefs. It is widely used in treating anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
A form of CBT that combines strategies of acceptance and change. DBT helps in managing emotions, and is often used for treating borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, and self-harm behaviors in adolescents.
Play Therapy
A therapeutic approach that uses play to help children express feelings, develop problem-solving skills, and learn new ways of relating to others. It is particularly beneficial for younger children who may not have the language skills to articulate their feelings.
Narrative Therapy
A respectful and non-blaming approach to counseling and community work, which centers people as the experts in their own lives. It helps in separating the person from the problem and is especially useful for treating trauma and improving self-identity.
Family Systems Therapy
A therapy that views problems within the family context and works on understanding and improving family relationships. It is effective for issues such as adolescent behavior problems and the impact of family transitions.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
A modified form of CBT that incorporates mindfulness practices such as meditation and breathing exercises. It is effective in preventing the recurrence of depression, particularly among adolescents.
Art Therapy
An expressive therapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Art Therapy is especially useful for non-verbal expression and has been applied in cases of trauma and emotional difficulties.
Bibliotherapy
A therapy that involves storytelling or the reading of specific texts with the purpose of healing. It helps clients to reflect on their own life stories and develop better problem-solving strategies. Often used in school settings for personal development and with learning disabilities.
Behavioral Therapy
A therapy that focuses on modifying harmful behaviors through reinforcement, punishment, or modeling. It is particularly effective in treating ADHD, conduct disorders, and phobias in children and adolescents.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
A goal-directed collaborative approach to psychotherapeutic change that is conducted through direct observation of clients' responses to a series of precisely constructed questions. It is useful for building solutions rather than focusing on problems and can help with behavior issues and school problems.
Gestalt Therapy
A form of psychotherapy that emphasizes personal responsibility and focuses on the individual's experience in the present moment. Gestalt Therapy is useful for increasing self-awareness and resolving unfinished business and is applied in both individual and group settings.
Sandplay Therapy
A nonverbal, therapeutic intervention that makes use of a sandbox, toy figures, and sometimes water, to create scenes of miniature worlds that reflect a person's inner thoughts, struggles, and concerns. It is a helpful tool for children and adolescents to express their feelings and resolve conflicts.
Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)
A therapeutic approach that helps clients to better identify, experience, accept, and manage their emotions. EFT is an empirically supported treatment for depression, trauma, and interpersonal problems, and emphasizes the importance of emotion in human functioning.
Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
A short-term treatment for traumatic stress disorders that exposes the individual to their memories of trauma. NET is particularly effective in treating PTSD and complex trauma in adolescents.
Social Skills Training
A form of behavior therapy used by teachers, therapists, and trainers to help persons who have difficulties relating to other people by enabling them to learn new skills directly through the use of modeling, role-playing, and rehearsal. Effective for children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders and social anxiety.
