The Water Cycle and Oceans
5
Flashcards
0/5
Precipitation
Condensed water in the clouds falls as rain, snow, or hail. Precipitation over the ocean contributes to the salinity and water level balance in the seas.
Evaporation
The process where water is heated by the sun and turns into vapor, rising into the atmosphere. Oceans provide the majority of the water vapor in the atmosphere.
Infiltration
Water from precipitation soaks into the ground. Effects on the ocean include the eventual flow of this groundwater into the ocean, adding to its volume.
Runoff
Water that doesn't infiltrate flows on the surface towards the oceans. This process transports minerals and nutrients to the ocean, affecting its composition.
Condensation
Water vapor in the air cools and changes back into liquid, forming clouds. The interaction with the ocean occurs when these clouds are formed over the ocean and move inland.
