Flashcards
0/8
Biogenous Sediment
Composition: Shells and skeletons of marine organisms. Location: Deep sea floor, especially at mid-ocean ridges.
Terrigenous Sediment
Composition: Mineral fragments from continental rocks. Location: Continental shelves, slopes, and abyssal plains.
Pelagic Clay
Composition: Fine particles of clay and microscopic iron and manganese. Location: Deep ocean basins, far from land.
Cosmogenous Sediment
Composition: Particles from space, such as meteorite debris. Location: Distributed throughout the ocean floor.
Volcanogenic Sediment
Composition: Volcanic ash and particles from volcanic eruptions. Location: Found near active volcanic islands and along mid-ocean ridges.
Carbonate Sediment
Composition: Biogenous sediment made up mostly of calcium carbonate from organisms. Location: Common in shallow, warm marine waters.
Glacial Marine Sediment
Composition: Rock flour, pebbles, and other debris transported by ice. Location: Found in areas influenced by past or current glaciation.
Hydrogenous Sediment
Composition: Minerals that have precipitated directly from seawater. Location: Generally found on the deep ocean floor.
