Wax Resist
Apply wax to the clay body. When glaze is applied, it resists the areas with wax. Effects include clean negative space and glaze control.
Paddling
Shape or texture the surface of soft to leather-hard clay with wooden paddles, often wrapped in fabric. Effects include faceted textures and altered forms.
Impressing
Press objects into soft or leather-hard clay to create patterns or textures. Effects include organic imprints or geometric designs.
Bubble Glazing
Blow air through a mixture of glaze and liquid to create bubbles, which you then transfer onto the pottery surface. Effects include uniquely textured patterns.
Carving
Remove clay to create patterns or images, typically on leather-hard clay. Effects can be simplistic or highly detailed reliefs.
Stenciling
Use cutouts to apply slip, underglaze, or glaze in specific shapes. Effects include sharp-edged forms and repeatable patterns.
Thumbing
Press thumbprints or other finger marks into clay for a pattern or texture. Effects include rhythmic patterns and a handcrafted feel.
Feathering
Drag a feather or similar tool through wet slip or glaze to create marbled or combed effects.
Incising
Carve narrow lines into leather-hard clay with a sharp tool. Effects can include detailed drawings or patterns within the clay surface.
Sprigging
Attach pre-molded clay shapes onto the surface. Effects can range from raised decorative elements to complex, layered imagery.
Slip Trailing
Use a slip trailer or squeeze bottle to apply slip in raised lines. Effects can range from textured patterns to detailed drawings.
Terra Sigillata
Apply a fine, pigmented clay slip to a bone-dry or leather-hard clay body and polish when semi-dry. Effects include a soft sheen to a high gloss finish.
Marbling
Combine different colored clays or slips and mix just slightly before throwing or hand-building. Effects include swirled colors and a natural, organic look.
Sgraffito
Apply a layer of colored slip to leather-hard clay, then carve designs through the slip to reveal the clay body color underneath. Effects include contrasting colors and intricate patterns.
Mishima
Carve fine lines into leather-hard clay, fill carvings with contrasting slip, and then scrape back the surface. Effects include precise line work and contrasting colors.
Transfer Printing
Press tissue paper or other transfer material with printed patterns onto the clay body. Effects include precise patterns and potentially complex imagery.
Underglaze Decoration
Paint designs onto bisqueware with underglazes, then cover with a clear glaze. Effects include vibrant colors and sharp or soft lines.
Cuerda Seca
Use a mixture of manganese and oil to prevent glazes from flowing together. Effects include vibrant, separated color regions.
Glaze Layering
Apply multiple glaze layers either for whole piece or in parts. Effects include depth in color, blending, and visual texture.
Piercing
Remove clay from a leather-hard or dry piece to create holes or lace-like patterns. Effects include translucency with light and delicate aesthetics.
