Flashcards
0/15
Opening
Creating the initial hole in the centered clay. Gently press thumbs into the center of the clay until the desired depth is reached.
Collaring
Narrowing the top portion of a piece by squeezing the clay inwards. Used to create necks on vases and bottles.
Wedging
The act of kneading the clay to remove air bubbles and prepare it before centering on the wheel.
Centering
The process of aligning the clay on the wheel to reduce wobble. Press down and towards the center while the wheel spins.
Thinning
Refining the walls to the desired thickness. Usually done after pulling using a gentle touch.
Coning
A part of centering, where the clay is shaped into a cone then pressed back down to enforce alignment and consistency.
Shaping
The process of contouring and styling the vessel. Tools and hand movements dictate the final shape.
Compressing
Smoothing and evening out the walls and rim of the pottery to remove inconsistencies and prepare for trimming.
Flooring
Creating the base of the pot after opening. Compress the clay at the bottom to strengthen the base.
Pulling
The technique of elongating the walls of the pottery. Apply upward pressure from the inside and outside.
Glazing
Applying a liquid glaze layer to bisque-fired pottery. The glaze will vitrify in the final firing, creating a glassy surface.
Drying
The period where the piece is left to harden. Adequate drying is key before bisque firing.
Attaching Handles
The process of adding a clay handle to a piece. The clay slab is attached and shaped while semi-dry.
Trimming
Removing excess clay from the bottom and sides of a leather-hard piece to refine shape and create a foot.
Slowing Down
Reducing the wheel speed as the detail work on finer features begins, allowing for precise control.
