Gateway
A network node that serves as an entry point to another network, often connecting different networking technologies.
Switch
Connects devices within a single network, forwards data based on MAC addresses using frames.
Access Point (AP)
A device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi or related standards.
Proxy Server
An intermediary server that separates end users from the websites they browse, providing anonymity and possibly content caching.
VPN Concentrator
A device that allows VPN clients to connect to a secure network by creating encrypted tunnels.
Wireless Range Extender
A device that repeats the wireless signal from your router to expand its coverage, improving signal strength and enabling devices to connect from farther away.
Bridge
Connects two or more network segments, reducing traffic by dividing collision domains.
Modem
Converts digital data from a computer to analog signals for transmission over telephone lines, and vice versa.
Intrusion Detection System (IDS)
A device or software application that monitors a network or systems for malicious activity or policy violations.
Firewall
Network security device that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic based on an organization's previously established security policies.
Packet Switch
A network device that routes data packets based on their destination address, found in local networks and the internet.
Load Balancer
Distributes network or application traffic across multiple servers to ensure no single server becomes overloaded, improving responsiveness and availability.
Router
Connects multiple networks together, routes data packets between networks based on IP addresses.
Hub
A basic networking device that connects multiple computers or other network devices together, but data packets are sent to all connected devices (collision domain is not divided).
Repeater
Amplifies or regenerates network signals to extend the distance over which data can travel.
Network Interface Card (NIC)
Hardware that connects a computer to a network, allowing it to communicate with other networked devices.
Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)
A network security/threat prevention technology that examines network traffic flows to detect and prevent vulnerability exploits.
Content Switch
Also known as a Web switch or multilayer switch, it routes traffic to different servers based on the content type or URL, improving performance and load balancing.
Network Attached Storage (NAS)
A dedicated file storage device that provides local area network (LAN) users with centralized, consolidated disk storage through a standard Ethernet connection.
KVM Switch
Allows a user to control multiple computers from one or more sets of keyboards, video monitors, and mice.
