TCP
Transmission Control Protocol - a core protocol of the Internet protocol suite that provides reliable, ordered, and error-checked delivery of a stream of bytes between applications running on hosts communicating via an IP network.
IP
Internet Protocol - a set of rules governing the format of data sent over the internet or other networks.
HTTP
Hypertext Transfer Protocol - an application protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems.
HTTPS
Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure - an extension of HTTP that is used for secure communication over a computer network, and is widely used on the Internet.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol - a standard network protocol used for the transfer of computer files between a client and server on a computer network.
LAN
Local Area Network - a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, laboratory, or office building.
WAN
Wide Area Network - a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic area for the primary purpose of computer networking.
WLAN
Wireless Local Area Network - a wireless computer network that links two or more devices using wireless communication to form a local area network within a limited area such as a home, school, computer laboratory, or office building.
VPN
Virtual Private Network - a service that allows you to connect to the Internet via an encrypted tunnel to ensure your online privacy and protect your sensitive data.
NAT
Network Address Translation - a method of remapping one IP address space into another by modifying network address information in the IP header of packets while they are in transit across a traffic routing device.
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - a network management protocol used on IP networks whereby a DHCP server dynamically assigns an IP address and other network configuration parameters to each device on a network.
DNS
Domain Name System - a hierarchical and decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network.
SSH
Secure Shell - a cryptographic network protocol for operating network services securely over an unsecured network.
SSL
Secure Sockets Layer - a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client—typically a web server (website) and a browser, or a mail server and a mail client.
TLS
Transport Layer Security - a cryptographic protocol that provides communications security over a computer network.
ARP
Address Resolution Protocol - a communication protocol used for discovering the link layer address, such as a MAC address, associated with a given IP address.
ICMP
Internet Control Message Protocol - a network protocol that is used to send error messages and operational information indicating success or failure when communicating with another IP address.
BGP
Border Gateway Protocol - a standardized exterior gateway protocol designed to exchange routing and reachability information among autonomous systems (AS) on the Internet.
OSPF
Open Shortest Path First - a routing protocol for Internet Protocol (IP) networks that uses a link state routing algorithm and falls into the group of interior gateway protocols.
VoIP
Voice over Internet Protocol - a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.
IPv4
Internet Protocol version 4 - the fourth version of the Internet Protocol (IP) and it is the first version of the protocol to be widely deployed.
IPv6
Internet Protocol version 6 - the most recent version of the Internet Protocol (IP), designed to eventually replace IPv4.
RIP
Routing Information Protocol - one of the oldest distance-vector routing protocols that employ the hop count as a routing metric.
UDP
User Datagram Protocol - one of the core members of the Internet protocol suite that allows applications to send messages to other hosts on an IP network with minimal protocol mechanism.
MTU
Maximum Transmission Unit - the size of the largest protocol data unit that can be communicated in a single network layer transaction.
MPLS
Multi-Protocol Label Switching - a type of data-carrying technique for high-performance telecommunications networks that directs data from one network node to the next based on short path labels rather than long network addresses.
QoS
Quality of Service - the description or measurement of the overall performance of a service, such as a telephony or computer network or a cloud computing service, particularly the performance seen by the users of the network.
SSID
Service Set Identifier - the name associated with an 802.11 wireless local area network including home networks and public hotspots.
WEP
Wired Equivalent Privacy - a security algorithm for IEEE 802.11 wireless networks that provides data confidentiality comparable to that of a traditional wired network.
WPA
Wi-Fi Protected Access - a family of network security protocols and security certification programs developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance to secure wireless computer networks.
WPA2
Wi-Fi Protected Access II - a security protocol and security certification program developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance to secure wireless computer networks.
IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol - an Internet standard protocol used by e-mail clients to retrieve e-mail messages from a mail server over a TCP/IP connection.
POP3
Post Office Protocol version 3 - an application-layer Internet standard protocol used by local e-mail clients to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connection.
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - an Internet standard communication protocol for electronic mail transmission across Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
APIPA
Automatic Private IP Addressing - a feature of Windows-based operating systems that enables a computer to automatically assign itself an IP address within a specific range if a DHCP server is not available.
MAC
Media Access Control - a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications at the data link layer of a network segment.
CSMA/CD
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection - a media access control method used most notably in early Ethernet technology for local area networking.
PAN
Personal Area Network - a network for interconnecting devices centered around an individual person's workspace.
