Anti-fouling Coatings
Anti-fouling coatings are specialized layers that inhibit the growth of barnacles, algae, and marine organisms on ship hulls. They contain biocides and are often applied through spray or roller methods.
Corrosion Inhibitors
Corrosion inhibitors are chemicals that, when added in small amounts to the environment, reduce the corrosion rate of metals. They can be applied through the coolant, fuel, or lubricant systems.
Thermal Spray Coatings
Thermal spray coatings involve the application of melted or heated materials onto a surface, providing a coating that can protect against wear, corrosion, and heat. Materials used include metals, ceramics, and plastics.
Zinc-Rich Primers
Zinc-rich primers are composed of metallic zinc dust in a binding matrix. They provide galvanic protection to iron and steel, acting as a sacrificial anode when in contact with the substrate.
Silicone Coatings
Silicone coatings have high thermal and oxidative stability, and are used for their water-repellent properties. They are suitable for exhaust systems and components exposed to high temperatures.
Pitting Corrosion
Pitting corrosion is a localized form of corrosion that leads to the creation of small holes or 'pits' in the metal. This can be countered through regular inspection, adopting proper alloy selections, and applying inhibitors.
Epoxy Coatings
Epoxy coatings are thermosetting polymers used widely in the marine industry due to their strong adhesion, chemical and heat resistance, and durability. They are commonly applied to the hulls of ships and internal tanks for corrosion protection.
Galvanic Corrosion
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals are in electrical contact in a corrosive electrolyte. It can be prevented by isolating the metals, applying protective coatings, or using sacrificial anodes.
Polyurethane Coatings
Polyurethane coatings offer excellent UV resistance and flexibility, which makes them ideal for topcoat applications in marine environments. They are often applied over an epoxy primer to enhance durability.
Acrylic Coatings
Acrylic coatings are fast-drying paints used for their durability and resistance to sunlight and weathering. They are frequently used for aesthetically important surfaces due to their glossy finish.
Intermittent Cathodic Protection
Intermittent cathodic protection is a control method where cathodic protection is applied in intervals rather than continuously. This can save energy and reduce the production of harmful by-products.
Powder Coatings
Powder coatings are applied as a dry powder and then cured under heat to form a skin. They are environmentally friendly, offer high-quality finishes, and are used for durable surfaces and components.
Cathodic Protection
Cathodic protection is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. Two types include sacrificial anodes and impressed current systems.
Chlorinated Rubber Coatings
Chlorinated rubber coatings are known for chemical and water resistance. They are easily applied and fast-drying, used on surfaces that require frequent washing down such as decks and tanks.
Alkyd Coatings
Alkyd coatings are oil-based paints that provide a hard and protective finish. They are used for metal surfaces due to their resistance to abrasion and their rust-inhibiting properties.
