Greenhouse Gases Regulation
9
Flashcards
0/9
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
Regulatory measures under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol aim to phase down production and use. No specific permissible levels, but incremental reductions over time.
Nitrogen Trifluoride (NF3)
Regulatory measures are less common, but include reporting requirements and potential inclusion in future emissions protocols. Used in semiconductor and LCD panel production.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
Regulated and phased out by the Montreal Protocol due to ozone-depletion properties. No permissible emission levels, as their production and consumption have been banned in developed countries since 2010.
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Regulatory measures include emissions trading programs, carbon taxes, and fuel efficiency standards. No specific permissible levels, but the Paris Agreement aims to limit global temperature increase.
Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
Regulatory measures include controls on agricultural practices and industrial emissions. The permissible levels depend on local air quality standards and guidelines, such as those by the EPA.
Perfluorocarbons (PFCs)
Regulatory measures target reduction of emissions in the aluminum production and semiconductor manufacturing. Reporting requirements are set by protocols like the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
Water Vapor
Not directly regulated as it is a natural and major component of the Earth’s atmosphere with a short atmospheric lifetime. However, indirectly influenced by other emissions and climate policies.
Methane (CH4)
Regulatory measures include leak detection and repair programs, controls on agriculture and landfills, and limiting gas venting in oil and gas production. Specific permissible levels vary by jurisdiction.
Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6)
Regulatory measures include mandatory reporting of emissions for electric power systems and restrictions on use. The EU imposes specific use prohibitions in some applications.
