Signal Flow in Audio Systems

Flashcards
0/15
Preamplifier
Amplifies the weak signal from the microphone to a line-level signal that can be processed by other devices in the chain.
Equalizer
Alters the frequency balance of an audio signal by boosting or cutting specific frequency ranges, placed in the signal path often after the preamplifier stage.
Compressor
Dynamically reduces the dynamic range of an audio signal by attenuating louder parts and optionally boosting quieter sections to achieve a more consistent level.
Dynamic Processor
Any device that manages the dynamic range of an audio signal, including compressors, limiters, expanders, and gates.
AD/DA Converter
Stands for Analog-to-Digital/Digital-to-Analog Converter; it is responsible for converting analog signals to digital data and vice versa allowing signal processing in both analog and digital domains.
Audio Interface
Converts analog signals into digital signals for computer processing and vice versa, acting as a bridge between analog and digital domains.
Headphones
Personal audio listening device that allows monitoring of the sound signal closely without ambient noise interference.
Direct Box
Used to connect high-impedance, unbalanced signals to a low-impedance, balanced input, often used for instruments like electric guitars and basses.
Power Amplifier
Amplifies the line-level signal to a level that can drive loudspeakers, typically found near the end of the signal chain.
Mixing Console
Allows multiple audio signals to be combined, processed, and routed to various outputs, serving as the control center for mixing.
Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)
Software platform for recording, editing, and producing audio files, serves as the digital environment for audio production.
Effects Processor
Used to alter the sound signal in various ways, including delay, distortion, chorus, and many others, to enhance the tone or create special effects.
Microphone
A transducer that converts acoustic sound waves into electrical signals, typically the first stage in the signal flow.
Reverb (Processor)
Adds ambience and space to an audio signal by simulating the sound of different environments, often used to create depth in a mix.
Monitor Speakers
Speakers specifically designed for audio production that provide a flat frequency response for accurate sound reproduction.
