Internal Sovereignty
Refers to the location of absolute power within a state which allows the enforcement of laws, policies, and administrative decisions. It is exercised by the government and is about control within the state's borders.
State Sovereignty
The concept that the state possesses the full right and power to govern itself without any interference from outside sources or bodies. It includes making laws, administering justice, and implementing policies.
Monetary Sovereignty
The practice by which a state exercises exclusive power to issue and control its currency and to operate monetary policy autonomously. Its strength can impact global economics and trade.
Popular Sovereignty
The principle that the authority of the government is created and sustained by the consent of its people, through their elected representatives. This concept emphasizes the role of the people in granting and shaping power.
Legal Sovereignty
The concept that law-making power in a state is vested in a particular legal authority, such as a constitution or designated body of law-makers. It determines who or what entity has the ultimate authority to make laws.
De Facto Sovereignty
The practical, as opposed to legally recognized, exercise of authority over a territory. Despite possibly lacking international recognition, the governing entity has control and commands obedience from its people.
National Sovereignty
The concept that each state has the right to govern itself without external interference. It is the principle of international law that provides a state with the authority to determine their internal and external affairs.
Sovereign State
A political entity characterized by being independent and having control over a geographical area with defined borders. It has a permanent population, a government, and the ability to enter into relations with other sovereign states.
Parliamentary Sovereignty
A principle in some democratic frameworks where the legislative body has absolute sovereignty, meaning it is supreme to all other government institutions, including the executive or judiciary.
Territorial Sovereignty
The exclusive right of a state to exercise its powers within the boundaries of its territory. It encompasses the right to exclude others and to regulate economic activities and resources within its borders.
External Sovereignty
The recognition by the international community of a state's sovereignty over its territory and its right to conduct foreign policy without external influence. It is tied to the state's independence and equal standing among nations.
Sovereign Immunity
A legal doctrine that a sovereign state cannot commit a legal wrong and is immune from civil suit or criminal prosecution. It stems from the principle that a state is not subject to the jurisdiction of foreign courts.
