Assimilation
Assimilation is a strategy where an individual gradually adopts and incorporates the cultural norms, values, and behaviors of the dominant or majority group, often leading to the loss of characteristics of their original culture. Typical outcomes for individuals include greater social integration within the dominant culture but can also result in a loss of heritage and identity.
Integration
Integration, also known as biculturalism, is an acculturation strategy where an individual maintains their original cultural identity while also participating in the majority culture. Typical outcomes for individuals include balanced identification with both cultures and higher levels of psychological well-being.
Separation
Separation is a cultural strategy where an individual maintains their cultural identity and rejects the majority's culture. Outcomes for individuals may include preservation of cultural integrity but can also result in marginalization and reduced opportunities within the majority culture.
Marginalization
Marginalization occurs when an individual does not maintain their cultural identity and is also not accepted into or does not seek acceptance from the majority culture. It often leads to alienation, identity conflicts, and lower levels of psychological well-being.
Deculturation
Deculturation is an involuntary process where an individual loses their cultural roots, often due to coercion or lack of resources to maintain one's culture, without necessarily adopting a new one. It often leads to cultural disorientation and a sense of loss.
