High-context vs. Low-context Communication
High-context communication relies on implicit messages and context, where the surrounding situation provides cues to meaning. Common in Asian cultures. Low-context communication is explicit, relying on clear, direct language, typical in Western countries like the USA.
Direct vs. Indirect Communication
Direct communication involves saying what one means straightforwardly and clearly. Indirect communication implies or suggests the meaning without stating it overtly, often to maintain harmony or be polite. Common in high-context cultures.
Emotional Expressiveness
This refers to the degree to which cultures encourage or discourage the expression of emotions. In some cultures, open emotional expressiveness is considered healthy, while in others, such expression may be viewed as unprofessional or inappropriate.
Formality and Informality
Cultures differ in the levels of formality they expect in communication. High formality cultures stress manners, titles, and dress codes, while informal cultures are more casual and relaxed in communication styles.
Silence and Speaking
The interpretation and appropriateness of silence vary among cultures. In some, silence is a form of agreement or contemplation, while in others, it implies discomfort or disagreement.
Contextual vs. Personal Communication
Contextual communication focuses on the speaker's role or social status. Personal communication focuses on the individual regardless of their social roles. Cultures may lean towards contextual or personal communication styles.
Polychronic vs. Monochronic Time Orientation
Polychronic cultures view time as more fluid and are comfortable with multitasking and interruptions, while monochronic cultures see time as linear and segmented, prioritizing punctuality and schedules.
Communication Tools Preference
Different cultures may prefer different forms of communication, such as face-to-face meetings, emails, or phone calls. Technology adoption can also vary with cultural preferences.
