Power Distance
Power Distance refers to the degree of inequality that exists – and is accepted – among people with and without power. A high score indicates that a society accepts an unequal, hierarchical distribution of power, and people understand 'their place' in the system. A low score signifies that power is shared and well dispersed.
Individualism vs. Collectivism
This dimension measures the degree to which individuals are integrated into groups. In individualistic societies, people are expected to look after themselves and their immediate family. In collectivist societies, individuals expect their relatives or members of a particular in-group to look after them in exchange for unquestioning loyalty.
Masculinity vs. Femininity
This dimension explores the extent to which the traditional masculine work role model of male achievement, control, and power prevails over feminine values like quality of life, maintaining personal relationships, and caring for the weak. High masculinity scores are found in societies where success and competition are valued. High femininity scores are found in cultures that value caring for others and quality of life.
Uncertainty Avoidance
Uncertainty Avoidance deals with a society's tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity. It reflects the extent to which members of a culture feel threatened by ambiguous situations. Societies with high uncertainty avoidance tend to have rigid codes of belief and behavior and are intolerant of unorthodox behavior and ideas.
Long-Term Orientation vs. Short-Term Normative Orientation
This dimension associates the connection of the past with the current and future actions/challenges. A lower score reflects normative societies, which value time-honored traditions and norms, while higher score societies are more pragmatic, encouraging efforts in modern education as a way to prepare for the future.
Indulgence vs. Restraint
This dimension refers to the degree to which societies allow relatively free gratification of basic and natural human desires related to enjoying life and having fun. A high score on indulgence means that society allows relatively free gratification of desires and people can enjoy life and have fun. A low score indicates a society that suppresses gratification of needs and regulates it by means of strict social norms.
