Physical Boundaries
Physical boundaries refer to the physical space and contact between social worker and client. Management includes maintaining a professional distance, being mindful of body language, and creating a safe space that respects personal comfort levels.
Gift-Giving
Accepting gifts from clients can compromise the professional relationship and expectation of services. Strategies include setting and communicating clear policy regarding gifts, and in some cases, politely declining or redirecting the gesture towards something that benefits the service environment.
Self-Disclosure
Self-disclosure involves the sharing of personal information by a social worker, which might blur professional boundaries. Management can be done by carefully evaluating the purpose of disclosure, the potential benefits and harms, and always prioritizing the client’s well-being.
Emotional Boundaries
Emotional boundaries deal with the separation between the social worker’s and client’s emotional lives. Strategies for management include self-awareness of one's emotional state, seeking supervision or consultation, and applying stress-reduction techniques to prevent burnout and maintain professional composure.
Dual Relationships
These occur when professionals engage in more than one relationship with a client, potentially impacting objectivity and professional judgment. Management includes setting clear professional boundaries, seeking supervision, and adhering to ethical codes that guide against dual relationships.
