Harm Reduction
A set of practical strategies aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. Social workers may implement harm reduction techniques such as needle exchange programs, overdose prevention education, and advocating for safe consumption spaces.
Co-occurring Disorders
The presence of both mental health disorders and substance use disorders in an individual. Treatment from a social work perspective involves integrated treatment plans that address both substance use and mental health simultaneously.
Codependency
An emotional and behavioral condition that affects an individual's ability to have healthy, mutually satisfying relationships. In dealing with SUD, social workers help individuals recognize patterns of codependency and offer strategies to establish more functional interpersonal attachments.
Detoxification
The medical process of allowing the body to rid itself of a drug while managing the symptoms of withdrawal. Social workers support clients during detox through monitoring withdrawal symptoms, providing emotional support, and connecting them with medical professionals.
Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
A complex condition in which there is uncontrolled use of a substance despite harmful consequence. Treatment approaches in social work include cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and harm reduction strategies.
Relapse Prevention
A cognitive-behavioral approach providing individuals with strategies to avoid substance use following periods of abstinence. Social work strategies for relapse prevention include creating a coping plan, identifying triggers, and developing a support system.
Enabling
A behavior that’s characterized by a pattern of actions that contributes to the continued use of substances by someone with an addiction. In social work, treatment involves setting boundaries, using intervention strategies, and educating the enabler on healthy support methods.
Withdrawal
The range of symptoms that occur after stopping or reducing intake of a drug to which one has become addicted. Social workers support clients through medical detoxification, psychoeducation, and providing referrals for continued care.
Motivational Interviewing
A counseling approach that helps individuals resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior. Social workers employ this person-centered technique to address SUD and enhance commitment to change.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
A form of therapy that helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors. In the treatment of SUD, social workers utilize CBT to help modify negative thought patterns and behaviors related to substance use.
