Content Analysis
Content analysis is a systematic coding and categorizing approach used to explore large volumes of text and understand its meaning. In social work, it helps in analyzing social media, interviews, or media portrayals of social issues.
Focus Groups
A focus group is a qualitative research method where a small, demographically diverse group discusses a topic under the guidance of a moderator. It's used in social work to gather diverse perspectives on a topic or problem.
Mixed Methods
Mixed methods research combines qualitative and quantitative approaches for a more comprehensive understanding of a research question. Social work researchers use it to draw from the strengths of both methods to inform practice.
Experimental Design
This type of research design involves manipulating one variable to determine if changes in one variable cause changes in another. Social workers use experimental designs to test the efficacy of interventions.
Case Study
Case studies offer an in-depth investigation of a single group, individual, or event to explore causation and find underlying principles. Social workers use them to examine complex issues where variables can't easily be separated.
Ethnography
An ethnographic study involves the researcher immersing themselves in a community to observe and interact over an extended period. It's used in social work for understanding cultural and social dynamics within communities.
Longitudinal Study
A longitudinal study examines the same variables over an extended period. This method allows social workers to track changes over time and the long-term effects of interventions.
Survey Research
Survey research involves gathering information from a large number of people through questionnaires or interviews. It is used in social work to assess the prevalence of social problems, client satisfaction, or the impact of programs.
Correlational Study
A correlational study examines the relationship between two or more variables without manipulating them. Social workers use this to identify patterns or relationships between different social factors.
