Cultural Competence
The ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with people from cultures or belief systems different from one's own. In social work, it involves recognizing the diverse needs of individuals and communities, and responding effectively with interventions that are sensitive to the cultural context of the client.
Implicit Bias
The unconscious attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions. Social workers must reflect on their own implicit biases to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all clients regardless of background.
Microaggressions
The everyday, subtle, intentional or unintentional, interactions or behaviors that communicate some sort of bias toward historically marginalized groups. Social work practitioners must be careful in their communications with clients, ensuring they do not perpetuate microaggressions.
Intersectionality
A framework for understanding how aspects of a person's social and political identities combine to create different modes of discrimination and privilege. In social practice, it helps professionals recognize the complexity of clients' experiences and challenges based on their overlapping identities.
Structural Inequality
A condition where one category of people are attributed an unequal status in relation to other categories of people. It is the responsibility of social workers to recognize and work toward dismantling structural inequalities that affect their clients' opportunities and well-being.
Social Justice
The concept of fair and just relations between the individual and society. This is measured by the distribution of wealth, opportunities for personal activity, and social privileges. In social work, it involves advocating for the rights of clients and fighting systemic injustices that affect them.
Privilege
A special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group. In social work, understanding privilege can help in recognizing power imbalances and barriers that clients may face.
Empowerment
The process of increasing the capacity of individuals or groups to make choices and to transform those choices into desired actions and outcomes. In social work, empowerment involves supporting clients to gain control over their own lives.
