Equity
Equity in social work is about ensuring fair access to resources and opportunities for all, particularly those who have historically been marginalized. Social work practitioners strive to identify and reduce barriers to allow individuals to have an equal chance to succeed.
Access
Access as a social justice principle involves ensuring that individuals have entry to the resources, services, and opportunities they need. Social workers advocate for systems that remove barriers to access, such as transportation, cost, or language, thereby promoting full participation in society.
Diversity
Diversity involves recognizing and valuing the differences between people, including race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, disability, and sexual orientation. Social workers respect and celebrate diversity, adopting culturally competent practices and promoting policies that protect against discrimination.
Participation
Participation is crucial in social justice as it involves the inclusion of all segments of the community in decision-making processes that affect their lives. Social workers facilitate the participation of marginalized groups to ensure their voices are heard and considered in policy and program development.
Equality
Equality in social justice relates to treating everyone the same, regardless of their individual differences or needs. In social work, practitioners promote equality by aiming to provide the same level of service and support to all clients, recognizing the intrinsic worth of every individual.
